Matthew Maldonado wins first place at 2009 Pan No-Gi Championships

5 Medals in 5 Divisions!
VictoryJJ had a great performance by blue belt Matthew Maldonado at a UGC tournament in Brodheadsville, Pennsylvania on Saturday April 11, 2009. Matthew Maldonado competed in 5 divisions, winning 3 gold and 2 silver medals. Matthew won gold medals in the no-gi intermediate mixed weight; no-gi advanced 130-139lb; and blue belt open weight divisions. He won a silver medal in the blue belt 130-139lb division. Now with three gold medals and one silver he was satisfied with his performance. However, after hearing over the speaker that fighters were needed to compete in the absolute division under 200lbs for a UGC belt, he signed up, and submitted his first opponent by arm in guillotine and his second by a triangle choke. Now in the finals, he faced Anderson De Souza, a black belt who is a brazilian national champion, 2007 pan american champion and a 2008 nogi world champion. Hoping to go home with the UGC belt, Matthew came up short, getting submitted by leglock. Overall it was a great peformance by the 23 yr old blue belt and we are very proud. Great way to represent yourself and VictoryJJ !
