Helio "Soneca" Moreira (05.01.09 & 05.02.09)

World champion and 4th degree black belt Helio Soneca visited our school earlier this month. Soneca has been training since the age of seven, and his experience showed in his attention to detail. He has been renowned as one of the most technical competitors and instructors, and has held many major titles and had thousands of students over the course of his career. Our class was given the full benefit of his wisdom and philosophy about Jiu-Jitsu during his two-day seminar, in which he covered both Gi and No Gi instruction. Without revealing too much, Soneca focused on the most important aspects of grappling in a detailed and linear fashion. All skill levels of participants got a lot out of both days. Some of the students were lucky enough to take private lessons; they all spoke very highly of Soneca's technical instruction.

Rubens Charles Maciel - A.K.A. 'Cobrinha' (08.23.08)

After some of our students witnessed Rubens 'Cobrinha' Charles sweep just about every major tournament, including the World Championships, Mundials, Pan Americans, and many more Gi and No Gi Competitions, the name 'Cobrinha' took on a Jordanesque meaning. He was an inspiration, and something to work towards. Not long after, he began receiving write-ups in all of the main grappling magazines, most recognizing him as one of, if not the, best curret grappler pound-for-pound. So when our academy heard he was coming to give a seminar on August 23, 2008, everyone was ecstatic. Cobrinha exceeded expectations. He was a very humble and approachable guy, which helped to make him a patient and understanding instructor. He covered a wide spectrum of techniques, both Gi and No Gi, from beginner to advanced. All of his techniques had a unique touch that he explained in detail, which gave insight into why he is such a successful fighter. The students lucky enough to take private lessons were pleased, but did not wish to discuss any details about his private instruction, or what they had learned.
